Text to World Connection (Non-Fiction)
-carefully selects a real world event/issue and makes an insightful connection with a specific theme in the novel. The response concisely summarizes the example and analyzes the aspects of the example that connects with a specific theme in the novel. The response highlights specific parts of the novel that connect to the example. The response widens our perspective on the themes of the novel.
Text to History Connection (Non-Fiction Historical context)
-carefully selects a historical document that provides detailed contextual information for the novel. The source provides information on an aspect of Nazi Germany and World War II that is referenced/evident in the novel.
Text to Text Connection (Fiction)
-carefully selects a a specific excerpt from a fictional text that has intriguing parallels with a specific theme(s) in the novel. The response provides specific examples/details from both texts (the selected one and the novel) to draw these parallels and emphasize a specific and unified theme.
Artistic representation
-carefully selects or creates one image that portrays an important idea from the novel. The representations and reflections provide insightful understandings of these ideas from the novel. If you select an already made image, your written response shows depth of thought and insight. If you’ve created an original image (made one yourself), your image shows depth of thought and insight.
Minor Character Journal Entry
-the character journal entry is accurate representations of the characters personalities. The tone, style and diction are reflective of the character in the novel. The ideas, opinions and feelings show excellent inference skills and are reflective of the character in the novel.
Passage Analysis
-the five passages chosen focus on literary devices. In each, the passage is summarized and contextual information is provided to show a thorough understanding of the passage. More importantly, the devices and their purpose/meaning are explained and analyzed, showing an excellent understanding of the meaning beyond the literal. Finally, the analysis explains how the device helps to further emphasize an important idea or theme or helps to develop character.
